BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Toronto Dermatology Centre is one of the top places in Canada to manage your excess sweating or hyperhidrosis problem. Our staff of outstanding Toronto dermatologists can offer both a comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of your excessive sweating problem, and also discuss all the treatment options including: prescription lotions, prescription pills, over the counter treatments, Botox® (botulinum toxin) injections or surgery.

Not only do we provide treatments for excessive sweating in our Toronto dermatology clinic, but we have also published many articles and research on the use of various treatments for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. Normally, the body produces sweat to regulate body temperature. Sometimes, the nerves that control the sweat glands become overactive and excess sweat is produced. It can have a significant impact on self-confidence and can affect your quality of life. Botox® blocks the communication between nerves and sweat glands.

What areas can be treated by BOTOX®?

The underarms, palms, soles, scalp and forehead, and groin may be treated with Botox®. Toronto Dermatology Centre has extensive experience using Botox® to deliver optimal results with great safety.

How is the hyperhidrosis treatment done?

Tiny injections of Botox® are administered to the affected area, taking between 10-20 minutes to perform.

Does it hurt?

Tiny pinpricks can be felt, but if needed, an anaesthetic cream can be applied beforehand to numb the skin or ice during the procedure. Taking acetaminophen 1hr before the procedure can also reduce discomfort.

How long does it take to reduce sweating?

The reduction in sweating begins to take effect in the first few days, but it may take 7-14 days to reach full effectiveness. Toronto Dermatology Centre has observed improvement starting in as early as 3 days, although every person is different.

How long will the effects last?

Sweating is usually controlled for 6 to 12 months. Repeat treatments can be administered as the effects begin to wane.

Are there any side effects?

Mild discomfort at the time of Botox®  treatment, occasional bruising, and occasional temporary muscle weakness if the hands are treated. Side effects are minimized by having a skin expert (dermatologist) assess & manage your care. Toronto Dermatology Centre is staffed by well-respected and experienced dermatologists, skin care specialists, and nurses to ensure optimal safety.

How can I know if treatment will be effective for me?

One of the dermatologists at Toronto Dermatology Centre will take your medical history, perform an examination and assess you. They can determine the best treatment for your excessive sweating based on a number of factors.

Is this treatment covered by OHIP or my drug plan?

Your assessment of excess sweating or hyperhidrosis is covered by OHIP. The BOTOX® medication is typically covered by the majority of private drug plans, and an additional injection fee is charged to the patient for performing the procedure. Because of its impressive effectiveness, many patients without drug plans still choose to have treatments with Botox®. Toronto Dermatology Centre can answer any questions you have about cost, safety, and effectiveness during your initial consultation.
